RENITA Advisor Dr. Karolina Urban talks to TSN’s She’s Got Game about the concussion gender data gap

RENITA’s Advisor and former professional hockey player Dr. Karolina Urban talks to TSN’s Michaela Schreiter and Robyn Flynn about how her own sports concussion led her to become a neuroscientist. Talking to She’s Got Game she speaks about partnering with RENITA to build a concussion tool that looks at athletes actual brain activity as a measure of injury to determine when it’s safe to return to play with the aim to help athletes avoid going back to play prior to fully healing – something she has first hand experience with.

RENITA Advisors Dr. Jing Zhang and Dr. Benjamin Dunkley lead landmark study showing PTSD and Concussion can be reliably differentiated by brain activity alone

Did you know that PTSD and Concussion have substantially overlapping symptoms? It makes diagnosis very difficult, yet it’s important because they have such different treatment pathways. However, while the symptoms overlap, the underlying brain activity is different between the two injuries, and RENITA’s very own Dr.’s Jing Zhang, PhD and Benjamin Dunkley have written the first study to employ MEG (a brain scanner that maps brain activity with millimetre and millisecond accuracy) to reliably differentiate the two! This demonstrates the potential of using ‘invisible’ Brain Activity to understand and differentiate these two debilitating conditions.

RENITA Medical and SickKids Hospital partner to help close the concussion gender data gap

Co-Founder Caitlin Baltzer, and Advisory Board Members Dr.’s Ben Dunkley and Karolina Urban talk to CTV News about RENITA’s concussion study which aims to close the gender data gap and build a concussion tool that takes biological sex into account.

RENITA’s Advisor Dr. Benjamin Dunkley contributes to historic review of concussion studies

RENITA’s own Dr. Benjamin Dunkley contributed to the very first systematic review of MEG studies focused on adult concussion. The study by Christopher Allen et al. identifies biomarkers with the potential to diagnose concussion and capability to predict and monitor Concussion Recovery over time. The study concludes that verifying MEG’s potential as a concussion biomarker would help meet an urgent clinical need within civilian, sports and military medicine – something RENITA is passionate about helping to facilitate.
